How does Powerball work?
Players pick five white balls from 1 to 69 and one red Powerball from 1 to 26. A ticket costs $2, and the Power Play option multiplies non-jackpot prizes. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338.
When are Powerball drawings?
Powerball is drawn every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Results usually appear here within a day of each draw.
Which draws are included?
Only draws since October 7, 2015 are counted, when Powerball moved to its current format of white balls 1–69 and Powerball 1–26, so every number has had the same chance in every draw counted.
What are hot, cold and overdue numbers?
Hot numbers are the ones drawn most often in the period you pick, and cold numbers are drawn least often. Overdue numbers are those that have gone the longest without being drawn. The frequency grid compares each number's count with what pure chance would predict for the same number of draws.
Where does the data come from?
Results come from the New York State open data portal (data.ny.gov), which publishes the official winning numbers for every Powerball and Mega Millions draw. Massachusetts plays the same multi-state games, so the numbers are identical to those announced by the Massachusetts State Lottery.
Can statistics help me win?
No. Every draw is random and independent, so a number that has come up often, or not for a while, is no more or less likely to be drawn next time. These statistics are for interest only.
