            About Mega Millions statistics

            How does Mega Millions work?

Players pick five white balls from 1 to 70 and one gold Mega Ball from 1 to 24. Since April 8, 2025 a ticket costs $5 and every ticket includes a built-in multiplier on non-jackpot prizes. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 290,472,336.

            When are Mega Millions drawings?

Mega Millions is drawn every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Results usually appear here within a day of each draw.

            Which draws are included?

Only draws since October 31, 2017 are counted, when Mega Millions moved to white balls 1–70. The Mega Ball range was 1–25 until April 8, 2025 and 1–24 since, so the Mega Ball grid shows 25 only when the selected period includes older draws.

What are hot, cold and overdue numbers?

Hot numbers are the ones drawn most often in the period you pick, and cold numbers are drawn least often. Overdue numbers are those that have gone the longest without being drawn. The frequency grid compares each number's count with what pure chance would predict for the same number of draws.

Where does the data come from?

Results come from the New York State open data portal (data.ny.gov), which publishes the official winning numbers for every Powerball and Mega Millions draw. Massachusetts plays the same multi-state games, so the numbers are identical to those announced by the Massachusetts State Lottery.

            Can statistics help me win?

No. Every draw is random and independent, so a number that has come up often, or not for a while, is no more or less likely to be drawn next time. These statistics are for interest only.
